Very nice pretty healthy recipe. I used all the same ingredients but changed upward the prep order to make it easier for me to put together on a busy day. I diced upward the onion, carrots (used a lot more carrots) celery. Cooked the beef, added the onions, carrots and celery and cooked that a bit, added the goop & bouillon cube, tomato sauce - brought to a depression simmer - added the potatoes and turned the heat down to low and let simmer - just before serving I added the cabbage and let simmer while the rolls baked. No added common salt was needed. Perfectly easy weeknight meal. This tin all be done using the crockpot - get-go of the stove and end the simmer and cabbage in the crockpot.

I absolutely loved this recipe but I did make some changes. Instead of the love apple sauce I used 1 xiv.5 oz can of diced tomatoes with the juice and a small can of tomato plant paste. I besides added a tin of drained corn and a gutted and diced jalapeno to add a petty kick. I added these along with the residual of the veggies and let it simmer for 70 minutes. Both myself and my partner absolutely loved information technology!

Fantabulous stew! I make this in the crock pot. Just brown the meat, put information technology in the crock pot and cover with the balance of the ingredients. Cook on low all day and information technology comes out great! Another great excuse to eat cabbage. Keen every bit-is, but I've likewise added corn, peas, cauliflower, etc.

My wife tin can make a great stew and i accept been trying to brand a recipe to beat hers and have nifty season with tender meat and washed vegies that didnt taste similar some chemic, well this recipe beat hers by far. I didn't change annihilation, the beef was real tender, the goop had swell flavor and the cabbage fabricated this stew fifty-fifty better. You have to try this recipe, you volition brand this over again. My wife really liked this stew and admitted it that information technology taste ameliorate and then hers.
12/28/2012
I made this recipe in my pressure cooker and it cut the cooking time down to about 35 minutes. It turned out perfectly. I browned the beef in a picayune oil for about 12 minutes, pressure cooked the meat, goop, onion, and spices for xv minutes, added the veggies and pressure cooked for 7 minutes, added the tomato sauce and force per unit area cooked for 1 minute. Fabled!
11/27/2012
Prepared this recipe exactly like the original with no changes. It turned out perfect! Very tasty the first day and the leftovers were fifty-fifty better the 2nd day. You volition non exist disappointed. Great recipe, and I'll definitely make this one over again.

ok, is it fair to give this 5 stars when I didn't follow the recipe? I just had to considering this soup is so succulent and soooooo skilful for us!!! I used ane pound of beef, fifteen oz tomato sauce, 6 cups of beefiness broth, iv large handful of coleslaw mix (Sam's lodge), ii large carrots, 1 onion, 1 c each of frozen green beans and corn and salt and pepper...and i tsp of carbohydrate to balance the acidity of the tomatoes. OH WOW! simple, delicious, hearty, salubrious goodness in a basin. Exactly what I want my family to eat to nourish themselves!!! the twenty minutes of simmering are nigh upward and the troops are starting to circumvolve!!! I've sense of taste-tested a little bowl already and I tin inappreciably wait for more!!!!
07/21/2013
Very good and easy to set up. I followed the recipe to the T, but added cayenne pepper at the end for extra kick.
01/29/2015
How good can beef and cabbage taste? Honestly? Well let me tell ya, this recipe fabricated a laic out of me! Obviously I was skeptical but I followed the directions to a tee and had some religion-it's rated 5 stars after all. At present I know why. Won't make whatever changes when I make this again. Bully recipe. Thanks Paul
10/27/2014
Fantastic season. The only changes I fabricated was I did not measure the cabbage I merely added the whole head, why measure if you dearest cabbage. I also added roasted garlic. I always have some in my refrigerator and information technology makes a great addition to any dish.
04/13/2013
something so piece of cake my young man went crazy over... every bite literally said wow... i don't become information technology... it was like the easiest recipe... time consuming only piece of cake and he was totally having his moment with this meal.. and i spend and then much time on exotic recipes... geez i'll make this ane again. I left out the tomato sauce considering i didnt wanna go on excavation in the cupboard

Equally someone who doesn't consume plenty vegetables, I was looking for a recipe to get more veggies into my diet. This actually did the trick! My boyfriend loves information technology. We follow the directions generally as listed (sometimes leaving out the onion, because I don't similar them), and information technology always turns out great. The cabbage is the star of the dish. Nosotros love to add TONS of cabbage to this recipe, especially because the cabbage shrinks as it cooks. I took away i star though because the tomato sauce flavor is very overpowering. Although my boyfriend loves the tomato flavor, I practice non, and we have started using one-half a can to reduce the strong tomato flavor a bit. It's still succulent, simply with the full can of tomato sauce, all I could sense of taste was tomato, and I really wanted to enjoy the other flavors in the dish. Half a can works for u.s.a.. It keeps the tomato flavor in the dish without overpowering the other flavors at work. Overall, great recipe! Really enjoyed information technology, and information technology is now 1 of our "regulars"! :)
12/04/2013
Very disappointed with this recipe. Our old standby swiss steak in the crockpot is much better than this. I won't be making this once again.
01/21/2014
I included a i/2c of marsala wine and a few pinches of herbs and it came out with a prissy flavour and very rich sauce. Very good!
01/17/2013
Simple and hearty recipe. We initially made the soup exactly as instructed but ended up doubling upwardly on the broth halfway through. We will definitely make once again. Thanks so much for the recipe!
06/04/2016
I fabricated it exactly except used napa cabbage and perhaps an extra bullion cube...it was Bully!!!! I am looking at the disquisitional review by Peggy and shakin my head!!! Never make it again??? Perhaps you didn't make it right the kickoff time....geeeez....Thank you for the recipe....PEACE
x/28/2014
I've never made a successful stew earlier but this one turned out bully.... The primal was to melt the stew meat long and ho-hum to get it tender and to throw your vegetables in during the last cooking hour which for me was at the one and half hour mark. I did make some adjustments simply nil extreme. I used 2 and one-half pounds stew meat. I used meat tenderizer on the stew while I browned the meat. I added 8 red potatoes since they were already on hand. Added corn. 4 cups of beef unsalted goop. A browning agent. And also added a one-half loving cup of sugar to eliminate the acids from the ruby sauce since I'm not a fan of mixing red and brown gravys in the commencement identify. My film of finished product is in the gallery...
01/10/2015
I take made beefiness stew and it is good ,merely this recipe was even improve, more nutritious, and lower in calories. I put everything into a pressure level cooker and cooked it well-nigh an hour. It was delicious.
03/02/2014
I was afraid information technology'd be bland so added a healthy tablespoon of diced garlic (from a jar) during the meat/onion phase. Also added a dash of cayenne pepper for a little boot. I needed 2-3 extra cups of broth after calculation the vegetables to requite it a nice consistency. We similar our stew thick and hearty but need plenty liquid to dip slices of crusty baguette. Instead of shredding the cabbage, I sliced it thin about i/4 inch thick and kept the pieces one inch long. Slap-up recipe! Other additions/swaps that might not make a difference but yous might like, added a can of corn, used 3 oz of love apple paste, diced tomato plant's instead of sauce. We didn't have celery. I like it only didn't miss it. I added 2 tablespoons of flour mixed with 1/2 loving cup water at the very terminate to give it the stew consistency I'm used to my Grandma making.
eleven/11/2013
Great start Recipe I used Beef stock for added flavor and put more than veggies in and so it called for. Information technology did take longer for the veggies to tenderize simply I did allow time for that. Information technology had great flavor and the extra cooking time just tenderized the meat more.
10/28/2014
First off, I followed the recipe exactly except for draining the grease because there seemed to be very little. It was just mostly wet from the meat. At present I volition tell you that I was very doubtful of this recipe nearly of the time while it was cooking, through all phases. I'm a sampler and I kept dipping my spoon in and thinking that I was going to have to help information technology a lot to make it edible. I at present have the tomato sauce in and still information technology'south just blah. However, after about 20 minutes, the flavor came together and information technology was fantastic. Yet, it did require a fair flake of salt. I'1000 very happy that I didn't drain the juice at the commencement because the gravy ratio was but perfect as it was and I think it may have been too dry without it. Thanks for a great recipe!
01/twenty/2019
I used purple cabbage looked awful but tasted corking. I had to employ up the leftover purple cabbage from a different recipe. Lol!
01/12/2013
This is so adept! Specially the next 24-hour interval later flavors meld. Yummy!
ten/29/2014
Merely change I made was to cook in my pressure cooker. Total recipe took about 1 hr start to finish. Really impressed the grand aunt and was so easy!!
01/05/2014
Splendid stew! I coated the meat with flour before browning it. That was the only change I made and everyone enjoyed their meal. I will definitely adopt this recipe!
05/05/2013
This recipe is very good. I am not a celery person, and then I left the celery out completely! I prepared information technology exactly as written minus celery and it is very yummy. Information technology took longer than 45 minutes for my potatoes and carrots to get tender just that only helped my stew meat to get even softer! It was yummy!
09/14/2013
First-class! I added garlic simply otherwise left the recipe unchanged. Everyone in the family unit loves this.
10/08/2018
I increased the corporeality of liquids and veggies adding, turnip, mushrooms more carrots, celery, murphy and onion equally well as the stew meat. And so so good! My husband LOVED it!
12/18/2016
I made this recipe today and information technology was wonderful. My hubby wants me to make it once again thus Friday to take to a family gathering.
01/23/2015
I dont know what I did wrong? Later on 1 hr in that location was nigh no liquid in the pot cooking the meat. I had the temp on 4, merely I was using my wider three" pot with a lid. That is typically a simer with information technology. Later on one 60 minutes, I ended up having to add five cups of water. The meat was plenty tender, and so I just added the vegetables at that bespeak. I simmered it nearly 45 more minutes, adding the tomato plant sauce at some point. My only change was calculation an extra carrot and using a 10oz bag of shredded cabbacabbage, which equaled 4 cups approximately. A bit of my potatoes did disolve, forth with the cabbage, but information technology thickened the soup anyhow. I like all the vegetables in this, but for me that is a long time sitting over a pot. I well-nigh halved all the cooking times and information technology was still enough. I rated this a four for flavour. Its really pretty adept and much less salty tasting than other stews. Merely a little too fourth dimension consuming for a week night repast for me.
ten/11/2013
this was a good recipe
10/27/2014
Made information technology in pressure level cooker. Cooked meat start. Then added veggies at end. Whole thing done in 30 mins. Kiddos and Dad loved information technology.
10/01/2016
DIDN'T CHANGE A Affair. Peachy TWIST ON Beef STEW!
12/03/2012
I made this stew equally submitted except I substituted a large container of mirepoix for the onion, carrot and celery. Piece of cake, rich, delicious.
eleven/10/2013
This was delicious! Threw in some frozen corn while I was at information technology- yum! The whole family unit loved information technology. :)
12/16/2016
Very adept. Be careful not to add too much lycopersicon esculentum sauce or it takes over the flavor.
09/08/2018
Very skilful!! Made per directions only added a fiddling more than goop & was quite pleased.
03/29/2020
Didn't change a affair. Perfect every bit is!
01/23/2014
It was my kickoff fourth dimension making this and information technology turned out bully with a few modest changes. Commencement, I used 6oz lycopersicon esculentum paste instead of tomato sauce. Next, I added my ain spices and used bong peppers & mushrooms (I didn't accept any celery). Lastly, I through in the tomato paste in the pot along with the potatoes, carrots, and everything else and cook information technology on medium/low temperature. Overall it took me well-nigh 2 and a one-half hours :~)
03/30/2018
This is probably the best beef stew I've made in a long fourth dimension. My other half rave d about it and wished it made more than. We were a bit Leary of the cabbage, but I followed the recipe to the T and we were pleasantly surprised. It's a keeper!
01/04/2015
Loved and did not make any changes.

Very flavorful and hearty. Prepared in pressure cooker on high. Saute beef and onion, add together all ingredients except potatoes and melt for 20 minutes. Release force per unit area, add together potatoes and cook another twenty minutes. Used beef gravy instead of beef stock and pizza sauce instead of tomato sauce to amp information technology up! Served with warm bootleg ciabatta bread....Fantastic flavor.
08/27/2018
I doubled the recipe. Turned out corking. My wife said I could take tuckered more grease off on he browning the meat step. Other wise tasted great. Ill do information technology over again.
10/09/2014
OMG! I but finished a huge bowl of this and would accept had more than if I wasn't and then stuffed! I've been cooking for the last four and a half decades and have fabricated more my share of stews. I would have to say that this is the best darned pot of stew that I've always made! Now, I tin't stand folks who charge per unit a recipe 5 stars and so proceed to tell y'all the myriad changes they made to the original. Submit your own recipe if your version is then terrific. That being said, LOL, here are the minimal changes that I made. For health reasons I used reduced sodium broth and salt free tomato sauce. I also found a salt free onion soup mix and used a tablespoon of that instead of the cube of salt-laden bullion. I also left out the celery as I didn't accept whatever and caramelized the onions to add a fleck more depth of flavor. Other than that, I followed the recipe equally written. Oh, I added a bit of flour towards the cease equally I am non fractional to thin stew. Even with the salt reduced to almost nothing, the taste was wonderful. All the flavors melded together without whatever i ingredient outshining the others. All in all, a very easy, flavorful stew for a chilly or raw fall or wintertime night. Thank you Paul for submitting.
05/xvi/2019
this was a very skilful recipe an piece of cake to brand
12/thirty/2019
Added fresh parsley and xv ounce of lycopersicon esculentum sauce.
01/03/2019
Absolutely the BEST stew recipe that I have made. It was a hit. I added more vegetable, therefore adapted the broth and bouillon. Otherwise made as stated.
09/eighteen/2014
Let me join the ranks of the raving reviewers. I am usually not a stew lover but I had some peak circular steak I needed to use and found this recipe. I made information technology exactly as written (with the exception of not peeling the potatoes) and it was delicious. Just the right consistency and the cabbage flavor is very subtle. I'll definitely be making it again.
01/29/2019
I agree its a little time consuming Simply well worth it. Only changes were one extra carrot and used almost 4 cups bone goop due to it simmering and cooking down. Fantabulous!!!
10/thirteen/2014
The perfect stew! We do make changes according to some of the reviews merely I think it would be great without them. We add some red wine, use beef stock and no h2o. Add 2 cloves of pressed garlic while browning the onions, earlier nosotros add the meat back in. Volition be a regular dinner during fall and wintertime.
05/05/2016
I made this final weekend and it was excellent, except I had leftover vegetables (I used my small crock pot instead of the large one). So, I am looking for another recipe to utilise them on this weekend.
08/29/2017
Great recipe I make as is, with no onion. I make simple spanish rice to go with it. I identify a spoon full of rice in a bowl and so add soup on top. Very delicious.
08/01/2013
Good outset, but triple or quadruple -- I ordinarily make enough soup to freeze at least 8 quarts for future utilize and to requite some to my kids. I also eddy finely shredded onions and cabbage (almost a whole caput) -- they just near dissolve and give the soup trunk. This is the base for my vegetable beefiness soup -- add together lots of veggies - try rutabega, acorn squash, turnips. I swallow vegetables in my soup that I'd never eat on their own. I leave out the potatoes as they don't freeze well, but you tin put ane/two cup barley or tiny macaroni instead.
04/23/2016
just made and it was very proficient. I added Sazon, Mrs. Dash Garlic and Herb salt free and sofrito (dwelling house made from scratch). I didn't add table salt cause Sazon has table salt.
07/06/2019
I made this stew and loved information technology. I just didn't add tomato paste because information technology normally does take an overpowering taste. I just diced up 2 tomatoes and included it. Overall it was good and what I felt similar eating on this rainy Saturday evening.
01/16/2020
So skillful! I followed the recipe exactly with the exception of the added common salt at the end. Equally at least i other reviewer noted, I was concerned I didn't have near enough liquid after adding the cabbage and veggies and cooking for 30 mins. More time and even more fourth dimension with the tomato paste saved things without me adding more liquid.
01/07/2014
Delicious! I doubled the goop and added garlic while the meat was simmering. Otherwise I kept everything else the same.
12/18/2017
Followed the recipe exactly. Information technology was not bad on a cold winter day!
01/11/2015
I love this recipe! Recently made and followed direction the only thing I add together was chicken wings. Just like my mom stew with the wings. Yummm
01/30/2020
This recipe it is excellent. I fabricated it for my family i mean solar day and I turned effectually had to double the recipe because it seem like it's only wasn't plenty. The simply slight change I made is when I browned the beef I added a touch of basil and a pinch of salt. I definitely will brand this again and again.
11/28/2016
oh my goodness! that is one delicious stew. I inverse three items. I added garlic, cooked the meat in red wine & did not add together celery. side by side time I'll accept to double the batch.
02/24/2016
Turned out great, I used twice the carrots and twice the potatoes. Likewise, I served over a bed of wild rice. The cabbage took longer than stated to fully cook.
12/16/2015
This recipe has become a favorite of our family. It is perfect as described. Equally additional preference I accept added a little more Cabbage and a 2nd can of Tomato plant sauce.
09/eighteen/2016

03/26/2015
Tasty. Easy to make. Plus it got my Hubby to swallow and really enjoy veggies.
10/27/2014
Delicious. I accept never cared for traditional stew, but loved this. I merely made a couple of small-scale changes. I used turnips instead of potatoes since my husband is diabetic. I call back the turnips made it better than potatoes would have. I besides used organic "better that boullion" for boullion and broth since I was using grass fed organic beef.
09/23/2021
Fantastic! Don't exist afraid to use more cabbage, carrots, etc., just add more goop. It is phenomenal.
12/13/2017
I made this in my crock pot, it was delicious!
05/22/2018

01/20/2020
Great recipe. I incorporated a few changes but tried to limit them to continue true to the original recipe. I dusted the beef cubes with seasoned flour before browning them to assist thicken the broth. I substituted brussel sprouts that I quartered instead of shredded cabbage and added mushrooms. Very hearty and delicious. Cheers for sharing.
01/fourteen/2018
Goodness, this stew was amazing! I added extra vegetables and more broth.
01/05/2016
Amazing flavor!
12/fifteen/2019
I loved this recipe. I omitted the potatoes considering my husband is going low carb. Wanted to brand it more of a soup and then a stew and then added extra beefiness broth, carrots and celery. I threw in a package of bulky onion soup mix to requite it extra flavor and sprinkled in some garlic salt. The cease issue was exactly every bit I wanted.
12/23/2019
Succulent!!
01/09/2018
Only like grandma used to brand, this is piece of cake and flavorful.
09/29/2016
Added 1 med rutabaga and a actress carrot
01/03/2016
Wow! This recipe was easy and succulent. A bit time consuming but definitely worth it to get the total flavor blended and the meat extra tender. I needed to add more beef broth to comprehend my meat and then a bit more when I added the potatoes. I too added one clove of garlic and some rosemary. I plan to make this again and add even more than cabbage next time.
05/05/2014
Don't change a thing. I have to double the recipe for my family of 5 considering they fight over the tiny corporeality of leftovers from simply i batch ;)
xi/23/2012
I made this tonight, it was awesome, my family loved it. I will definitely keep this recipe and will be making it again.
04/02/2014
I added turnip, parsnip and made a big batch. Information technology turned out keen my family'south loved it.
xi/08/2015
Pretty good stew, although I had to make a few small additions. The stew itself is quite simple, however I had to add a bit of flour in lodge to thicken information technology up. I as well just added 1/2 a can of the tomato paste, and used a minor can of diced tomatoes instead of merely the full can of tomato paste. The end result was pretty good! Oh, I also added a tiny fleck more beefiness flavour also!
07/06/2016
Very Good!!!!!!
05/26/2016
I added cerise wine, bay leaves, fresh rosemary and thyme. Have fabricated this for years without the cabbage! Much ameliorate with cabbage! Thanks!
12/xvi/2016
Exactly what I needed while I was sick. Browned the meat, carmalized the onions, scraped the dark-brown bits off the pan then put information technology all in the crockpot for the day.
01/12/2019
Just the best ive tasted
10/11/2016
Love this stew! The but things I changed, because of personal preferences, were I exchanged celery seed for the chopped celery, added peas and more than carrots, cooked it in a crockpot all day, and added a thickener only before serving. I doubled the recipe because I know my husband was going to dearest it likewise. It's a keeper!
12/18/2017
Followed the recipe exactly. It was cracking on a cold winter twenty-four hours!
eleven/29/2016
My hubby, who HATES stews, asked if I could make this again. I made it in our Instapot. Pressed the "meat" option after each improver and pressure cooked information technology multiple times. Melt-in-your-oral cavity tastiness.
08/13/2015
I make it only similar the recipe but add together a lilliputian extra water. I double information technology and freeze it. I add the potatoes later then they don't plow to mush later I freeze it. I also use new potatoes with the skin on. I've fabricated this several times.
08/fifteen/2013
Oh my goodness, this turned out delicious! I simply added actress carrots and followed the recipe.. I made 2 pots at one time (one for the freezer) and it cost me around $10. My kids proceed coming in and saying dinner smells great : ) im going to serve with rice and a sweet cornbread!
03/23/2016
This is the virtually delicious recipe on here! I've fabricated it a dozen times and never fails.
02/09/2018
I made it as directed. It was easy and delicious. Except I did use 3 carrots instead of 1, and 1.5 lbs baby aureate potatoes cubed. I had to add a little more liquid when I added the veggies. I liked that I could get the meat and onions in and cooking so take my time getting veggies prepped. Meat was tender and season was excellent. I was happy with the dish. It was equally practiced or amend the side by side day. Thanks for submission!
03/xxx/2017
Love this recipe! Did non have enough of the beef broth so I added a can of "Yes" Beef and Lentil Soup with a tin can of h2o. My husband loved it!
x/12/2018
I made a combination between this recipe and another 1. It was delicious! I took the communication from someone else who contradistinct the recipe and added 1 TBSP of A-1 and Worcestershire sauce. From my get to seasonings I added Oregano, Turmeric ,Kosher salt and Creole seasoning to give it a kick! Results one happy family, even my pickiest eater ate it all. A groovy fashion to get my children to eat cabbage which I love but they do not.
11/04/2018
Information technology is soooo yummy ! I seared the meat, and when the terminal batch was done, I scraped up the dark-brown bits with some of the stock - cooked it low & dull till the meat was tender - I doubled the potatoes & carrots - left out the celery ( not a fan of the flavor of cooked celery ) I did Due south & P for each footstep No slurry needed, the starchy potatoes did the job
07/12/2015
Delicious! It'southward great over Rice too. I was out of bay leaf and I added a lilliputian garlic pulverisation.
